When testing for HIV, get tested for other STI

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) essentially refer to the same thing. An STI is passed from person to person through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Many people with an STI have no signs or symptoms of the infection. The only way to know if you have an STI is to get tested. Some STI, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, can be cured. Other STI have no cure, but can be managed with treatment. Untreated STI can cause serious health complications. Some of these, including HIV and syphilis, can be passed during pregnancy and delivery of a baby.
